Hunter Lodging and Accommodations
Warm and beautifull surroundings at the Timberwood Lodge. Timberwood Ranch is located in beautiful Dolores County in scenic southwestern Colorado. The Timberwood Ranch offers hunters the best of Colorado hunting with all the amenities of home.

The Timberwood Ranch
Timberwood Lodge This area has long been popular with hunters because of the abundant wildlife. The Lone Cone Mountain, at 12,000', stands majestically overlooking Groundhog Lake and this 2150 acre privately owned ranch. Near Timberwood Ranch is two million acres of San Juan National Forest with a wide variety of terrain and wildlife. The ranch has been a sheep ranch and more recently grazing land for cattle. The family has endeavored to maintain the land as an undeveloped and pristine area.

The Timberwood Lodge
Hunt in comfort at the Timberwood Lodge. This ranch has been in the same family since 1928, but the beautiful new lodge was completed in 2002 and features many modern amenities. The Lodge is a 2000 sq. ft. building with three bedrooms, 2 baths, a great room, and a family-style kitchen. When you stay at the lodge you will enjoy a warm family-style environment, comfortable beds, and family-style meals.

Fishing
Timberwood Lodge on Groundhog lake offers great fishing. A unique benefit of staying at the Timberwood Lodge is Groundhog Lake just outside the door. Groundhog Lake provides excellent fishing from the shore, trolling by boat, or fly fishing. The ranch property joins the Lake for over a mile of shoreline. The water level fluctuates according to demands of irrigation in Montezuma Valley. Rainbow trout as large as 7 pounds have been caught in the Lake. Cut bows, and crawdads are also plentiful. If you have returned from the hunt early you can spend the rest of your day fishing for the granddaddy trout in the lake, we will even provide the fishing boat. So don't forget your fishing tackle when you come to stay with us!

Location & Transportation
Timberwood is 32 miles north of the town of Dolores in Dolores County. When driving to the Timberwood Ranch you may go north from Dolores on Road 31 or south from Norwood on Road 31. From Road 31 turn east on Groundhog Road for five miles to the ranch. The closest airport is in Cortez. Transportation from the Cortez Airport to and from Timberwood Lodge is available.

The hunting landscape
Hunting this property is relatively easy with elevations ranging from 8500-9500'. Several blinds overlooking stock ponds are accessed via pick-up truck or ATV's for those who are physically limited. All of the property is fenced and posted. Oak brush and stands of Quaking Aspen separated by meadows best characterize the landscape. The San Juan National Forest begins a few miles east of the ranch. There is a large number of elk in this region. Four to five point elk are the norm. Resident elk spend the summers and fall on the property and the number increases in the fall and early winter when elk migrate off the National Forest. Large herds pass through this area on their way to the winter range along the CO-UT border. Hunting success nearly always depends on weather conditions. A limited number of hunters per season will be allowed.
